Jefferson Lab Lattice Portal - Grid File Manager

Welcome to our instructions on how to use the Grid File Manager web interface ...

The Grid File Manager (GFM) is a java application designed to run on your desktop. Using the Grid File Manager, you can manage the files on a data grid host (like lqcd.jlab.org) without logging into the system. You can transfer files (even entire directories) from/to your local desktop to/from the server, or between an unmanaged file system (home directory or /data) and a managed area within a server, or between two servers (3rd party transfers) with just a couple of clicks.

We use Java Web Start to launch GFM from a web page, automatically downloading the latest version if yours is out of date. GFM uses https with X.509 certificates to perform privileged operations securely. Therefore, it needs to read your user certificate and CA certificate stored on the local system. For 3rd party (queued) file transfers, it uses proxy certificates automatically generated (once per day), and so once a day it will also ask for the passphrase to unlock your certificate store.

Install Grid File Manager: (Netscape 4.x only)
  1. Install the Java Web Start software.
  2. Request your DOE certificate from DOE Grid Certificate Service.
  3. Register your DOE certificate at JLAB HPC web site so that your certificate subject name (DN) will be used to map your web connection to your local user accout in the future.
  4. Run Install java application (need web start application) to install Jlab HPC CA certificate to your $HOME/.dg. It is required when generating a proxy certificate to connect the server securely.
  5. Export this certificate from browser into a file (usercert.p12) guarded by a pass phrase (this pass phrase is needed when use Grid File Manager interface). Save this .p12 file to $HOME/.dg directory on all the desktops where you will access Jlab lqcd web portal service. $HOME directory is defined by your system property and it may variant on different operation system or different login. You can find out its path when you run Install application in previous step.
  6. After all above steps are completed, clink the link to launch the Grid File Manager web interface.
  7. Jlab HPC group signs all JAR files needed by Grid File Manager. When you using this Grid File manager first time, Java Web Start will present a dialog displaying the application's origin, based on the signer's certificate. Click Start to launch the Grid File Manager application. Launch Grid File Manager: Documents:
